Gotho: Listen pal, you think I'd die when there's money on the line? |
| Okay hotshot, it's 2:40 in the morning and all you've got to review the next day is the ninth volume of Pokemon. What do you do, what DO you do? You pop in the third volume of Armored Trooper: Votoms and completely disregard the fact that you're already tired and reading subtitles while lying down are only going to get you MORE tired. I fell asleep halfway through the second episode of this disc and missed a good fifteen minutes. So I hate to rewind and ended up going to bed even later because I'm such a wuss. I would say it mattered that I slept for FOUR HOURS at work today, but I have one day left in this job and then I'm out of here, so what the hell do I care what my bosses think anyway? It's worth it to see three more episodes of a great show that apparently was made by the same guys who would go on to create Gasaraki. I'm not sure on that, I need to check my sources, but I was thinking just the other day about how much the combat in Votoms reminded me of the combat in Gasaraki, with the addition of mechs that dash like they were on rollerblades. You know, why they crouch down and go "Whirrrrr!"? Now that I think about it, don't the TAs in the latter show do that too?** |

The raid was successful! According to Gotho the amount of Jijirium they
stole is worth, about, well... a whole HELL OF A LOT. When you've got
a junkyard owner specifying things in such concrete terms, you just have
to believe it's true. I love every single character in this show because
they all have their little wonderful intricacies, except for Martin Luther
(which I've dubbed the priest, for various reasons explained in the previous
review). Martin Luther is a big jerk, and... the chief of police is
a big jerk too, and all the police officers. Other than that we've got
a stellar cast, even though Chirico is just one of those stereotyped tough
guys who doesn't care about anything except his sole guiding purpose in
life. Aw hell, they're all stereotyped. Vanilla, black guy. Gotho, greedy
old man. Coconna is, of course, the "wild child" girl that still acts
like she's four years old and hangs around just for the fun of it. Coconna
falls in love with the main character because otherwise she wouldn't be
the stereotype, and true to the nature of her archetypal background...
she doesn't exactly understand what's she's feeling. Coconna spends half
her time being confused, and the other half defending every single action
Chirico does, no matter how ridiculous. Why is it that I don't mind a
loner like Chirico, but his female version, Priss of Bubblegum
Crisis, pisses me the hell off? It's probably because of the situations
of each show, and the fact that Priss is such a DYKE BITCH. Men are supposed
to be cold and cool in old anime, women are supposed to have boobies and
wiggle said boobies. If they're doing anything that doesn't involve being
naked or near-naked, I feel my precious money has be wasted.

Who's the only person in the world that'd be crazy enough to sell stuff
back to the people they just stole it from? Gandalf the mighty wizard,
aka Gotho. He sets up a meeting with the police and requests 3 billion
gildains worth of gold in exchange for the return of Jijirium, the only
thing less insane than that is the fact that the cops actually take him
up on it... but not without a backup plan. Those police ain't stupid,
they're not about to lose their gold AND their Jijirium to a bunch of
street rats hiding out in abandoned buildings. I have to wonder how Chirico
manages to find a new AT to pilot every single time he has to get into
combat, but maybe he's just a man of "mad skillz". He is mos
def, because, as it is explained near the end he's a member of the "Red
Shoulders", a group of three Votom pilots who were the only ones to survive
out of the THOUSANDS that died in a battle. Three out of a couple thousand.
That's ridiculous ridiculous. It reminds me of the story of Gold and Silver
in The Professional. This makes me wonder if Chirico and the other
two guys then went on to kill the opposing force all by themselves. Wouldn't
that be a larf?

**Notice that the Gasaraki mechs
are called TAs and the Votoms mechs are called ATs. Interesting... Useless.
But interesting.
