Trigun #8:
Pioneer

Dave: Knives, you fuckin' nutjob. I just really like that quote. It shows that, not matter how mature I might try to appear, I'm not above quite a bit of sophomoric dialogue when the situation calls for it. Now, let me ask you a question. If you could get laid, mind you not by "Super Hot Merle", but by the more amazonian and not-so-svelte Milly, but you'd have to die the next day, would you do it? I wouldn't do it, but obviously Wolfwood would, and did! And DID. |

So now that I've just ruined basically the biggest surprise in the series, how's it goin'? The final disc of Trigun I think is a more solid closer than many other shows might deign to give you. Two episodes dealing with the remainders of the Gung-Ho Guns and a break before the final showdown that's been brewin' up for quite some time now. There's things I don't like. There's things you don't like. I don't understand why a guy shooting at people with a 60 foot long sniper rifle needs to be able to turn invisible while not being able to turn the gun invisible, let alone how the guy can re-aim something that's basically longer than anything else in the world. Also, I don't understand why the Japanese have this weird idea that grafting someone's arm onto your body is going to give you their superpowers/let them take control of your body. I don't think grafting an arm onto your body works in the first place, and second, I don't think anyone has a second brain or something hidden in their arm. If they did then that arm would try to take over your body and use it for itself. And if you masturbated with that hand, if would call the police and report you for sexual abuse and, let's face it, you totally deserve it you sicko. |

So obviously if you're masturbating with your brain-arm then I want nothing to do with you, and Trigun wants nothing to do with you, and I'm pretty sure Mr. Nightow wants nothing to do with you either. But he's Japanese so I don't really know, you'll have to ask him directly I guess. Did you know at one point I thought Nightow was a girl? Did you think that to? No? Of course you didn't, because that'd be RETARDED. I can't believe how much of a moron I was just a few years ago. So maybe I didn't pick up on the Trigun vibe right away, but there's nothing you'll hear me saying now that doesn't affirm Trigun as one of my favorite series of all time. Goofy? Sure, but it's in metered enough doses that it's usually gone by the time you noticed it. People in chaps? Yes, but they're not buttless chaps, so it's totally okay! Merle bunching people? Rare enough that it can be considered an oversight. Super hot chicks in white dusters with short hair and the ability to carry 100+ pounds of metal in sweltering desert heat? Well Jesus Christ I already said Merle. Trigun seems loaded to the gills with things that feel like they should be flaws, but end up being more like super-okay non-flaws instead and when the time for a finale comes, it goes out with about as big a bang as anyone might hope for it to go out with. While Trigun's denouement might feel a little too weak for some people, I don't think that you can go out on a show that preaches pacifism by killing more people. Trigun takes a dangerous gambit with the way it resolves things, but I do believe it works out for them in the end anyway. |

Let me illustrate to you why I like Trigun in one idea. At one point Vash comes across the name 'Knives' smeared in blood on a fountain or a monument, whatever. Anyway, Vash shoots the monument and I know what you're thinking. You're thinking "He shoots above the 'i' so it looks like he's dotting it" and I was too! But when he shoots, he doesn't dot it at all! That they didn't go for such a kitschy and obvious maneuver is basically a prime example of why I love this show so much. When Wolfwood gets laid, they don't show anything, but they don't make it so opaque that you have no clue as to what the hell happened. Trigun isn't a story that should involve graphic sex, Nightow knows this. That's because Nightow is my buddy, and it's not just because his name is weirdly Romanized either! Trigun's definition of pacifism trumps Kenshin's in a way that totally redefines the meaning of the word. It's like the world 'trump' just EXPLODED and now what's left in the aftermath is nothing but Trigun. Holy crap this show is awesome in ways I can't even describe and I'm really only just figuring it out after watch it a second time. Vash: He must be able to synchronize the sound waves
to the sensation of pain! |
