And, of course, I remember well how this all started. Years ago, in the parking lot behind the Korean church, guarding cars for the rich neighbors of my good friend "The Joel". We weren't scared, no we were both members of the 200+ pounds club (though I kinda barely tip the scales, I've got to show some solidarity for my man Joel), even though we were in the depths of West Philadelphia. But we were bored, incredibly so, and I had already smoked about a half a pack of "Captain Black - Little Cigars". So what were we to do? We borrowed my father's laptop and sat in the subzero (probably more like 20 degree) weather of mid-January Philadelphia and by god, we watched Magic Knight Rayearth. I'd like to think it was good, but it probably only was because it kept us relatively entertained and gave us a reason to hide in the broken down cubby hole of a former doorway that provided some shelter from the scathing winds. I swear we must've looked ridiculous, huddling around the pale glow of an apple powerbook and praying that the battery didn't die, dreading every moment because we knew that it would bring us only closer to having to go back into that unforgiving weather and walk more snobby, rich suburbanites back to their overpriced cars. |

So I take a week off every once in awhile, is that so wrong? It is, for a few reasons. 1) The reason I didn't watch any DVDs is because I wanted to play P.N. 03 and 2) I left school early on Friday, when I'm usually watching DVDs while waiting for Bare... and then Bare leaves school early too! So, the second reason isn't really a 'reason', I'm just mad about having to take the bus home but the FIRST reason is significantly more dire. I promise to never again take a week off from writing reviews in order to play a shitty, repetitive game. At least, when that game is P.N. 03 anyway, there's really no possible way I can do that anyway considering it's being shipped out to some sucker via eBay. Enjoy your purchase, moron. What this means is I'm back in the swing this week, and you can expect me not to lounge off for awhile, though I probably should as "lounging off" would involve me actually doing school work for once, and I'm sure my Physics teacher would be much more proud of me if I were to pull my grade up about 55%, but I suppose that's just the way it goes around here in Dave town. I've got more important things to do, and they all involve Magic Knight Rayearth! |

Which is sort of an odd analogy to P.N. 03. Both involve copious amounts of things I don't really care for, but they're both very different in many ways as well. P.N. 03's blatant attempt at sex appeal is totally lost on me, as is MKR's lovably cute characters. This is not too surprising as I am not A: A loser fanboy living in a parent's basement or B: A fourteen year old girl. Neither of these things are something I'd like to be anyway, so I guess it all works out in the end. This is not to say that the show is totally useless, I think it'd serve a fine purpose in the rearing and entertainment of young girls. One of my favorite parts is that it shows people dying and I'm eternally grateful for that. Ironically it's a "magical girls" that subscribes so whole heatedly to my very own "Let the Bitch Die" theory, but hey, that's just the way it goes sometimes. I'm not particularly settled with the girls at CLAMP for a whole host of things, Mokona, gender ambiguous people, ten year old evil sorcerers named after neck pieces... but sometimes, well, those chicks can do something alright. |

I just wish they'd pick something different to do once in awhile. You know, I've heard about the 'power of love' or whatever else this show seems so convinced that it should describe to us in volumes about thirty times now. Remember how ADV had that thing called like, a jiggle counter or something for that one show? Well I think the next magical girl anime that comes out should have something called a "power of love counter" and when it reaches 10 (in the first twenty minutes) it BLOWS UP YOUR TV because you were stupid enough to buy something so mundane and repetitive as one of these shows. What I'm (eventually) trying to get at here is this, the one prevalent similarity between P.N. 03 and Magic Knight Rayearth is that they both contain copious amounts of repetition, so much so that you might think that it was the central theme of both works, far ahead of any conspicuous ideas like 'entertainment' or 'fun'. I know repetition is good for children, but many of the people who watch this stuff AREN'T children! I swear to god, I am so tired of hearing about Cephiro being the "land of the will". You know what I would do if I lived in Cephiro? I'd will myself up three more reviews of this series so I didn't have to watch it again. |
