Mega Man 7 - Bombin' Shade of Blue
by Trenthian
(local download)

Let me preface this by saying that Bombin' Shade of Blue is probably one of the best titles I have ever read. It works whether you know the etymology or not, so if you don't want me to ruin it for you... skip ahead, but it's really quite simple. Our robotic friend, Mega Man, is otherwise known as the "Blue Bomber". But you're smart, I'm sure you were aware of that. And 'shade'? Well, the music is derived from the "Shade Man" level of Mega Man 7. Could it be any easier? Possibly, but I doubt it!

Once again friends, it's been awhile, but here I am left without a topic for Thursday update and Mr. Newstyle is always there for me. And now, he's gonna be there for you. But let me be brief, because there's really only one thing that you need to hear when this song is goin' down.

Pay careful attention to the precious moments between 0'19 and 0'27. That is what we're gonna call your "hook".

Now you might find yourself a little lost in this song at points, like astute remixer and commentator djpretzel does in his write-up on it (just click the link above!), but that's okay. Perhaps it is not a song for everyone. Though, truth be told, I am not a remixer nor do I have any musical background and I didn't notice a single thing wrong with the percussion track being lo-fi until I read his statement on the subject. Heck, I barely even noticed a percussion track at all! Well, at least not until 0'48 where it sorta freaks out on you. It's fuzzy sure, but the fuzzy brings us love!

As you're listening you'll notice softer, tinnier, synthy variations of our "hook". These are merely placeholders. Little itty bitty shreds of musical genius that are left to placate you, to whet your appetite until the main course has arrived.

And arrived it does. At 1'47 we recognize familiar Mega Man tones and 2'00 brings a weird game-fusion that only the most aware of Mega Man players would be able to recognize. Why, it's Ghosts and Goblins! But what is it doing here...? Well, as Trenthian aptly states in djpretzel's write-up, and you're okay for not knowing this because Mega Man 7 kind of sucked, this song is derived from a level in the game where you could get alternate music by holding down the A button and, why! It was the very music from Ghosts and Goblins!

But that's all tertiary to the main point, really. Right around 3:15 the song is fully prepared to rock your world, and 3'25 the "hook" is accomplished with some really snazzy synthed string-type things that change it up just enough to get your attention. At 3'36 you are given a new reason for living and that reason is the "hook".

Enjoy. You can thank me later.

But Could I Drive To This?: I think a person of your caliber could drive to anything, really, I do. But something like this should be reserved for only the uppermost echelon of driving moments, the moments that the angels strive to call their own. It's a beautiful thing, really, but you need a really big car to drive with an angel. It's only logic, those wings take up a lot of space.
