I propose a counter-hypothesis: I think the creators went into the process with only the scarcest idea of the monster's genesis and motivations, knowing full well that they could count on rampant Internet speculation to fill in any holes that they deliberately left out. That's why there's all this crap about a some nigh-invisible satellite splashing down, and the so-called "multiple monster" theory...
It's okay to leave some things to the imagination, but to not provide even the smallest glint of explanation - even on the viral web-sites - strikes me as asinine. At the very least, I should get the impression that creators knew exactly what it was that they were creating.
I don't get that feeling at all.
Lost feels like its getting made up as it goes along as well, but I know for a fact there is a hard, set outline of where that show is going and what the answers are to the major mysteries. Of course, where that is and what those answers are, I don't know. I suspect they are not going to be as deep and fulfilling as we hope.
I say this because I really think the Abrams crew doesn't come up with fully cooked ideas. Like, THEY don't think they're coming into a project missing information, but what they consider a complete premise just isn't. I haven't seen Alias or anything. But I thinking the failings of Abram's project to explain things fully is just that he doesn't do details, period.
