SKABS' OTAKON 2002 ARTIST'S ROOM REPORT
|
|
In the midst of all the excitement of big time Manga artists signing autographs, six theatres playing nothing but anime, and a 35mm theatre showing crazy death movies with an infinite body count starring Chow Yun Fat, there existed a small room called the Artists Gallery. That's not to imply that the artists room didnt get any attention but it paled in comparison to the rest of the rooms at Otakon, especially the dealers room, but thats another report for another part of the site. I must say though I was surprised by the turnout of non-artist people that came to support us and offer patronage. I never would have imagined that so many people would give two shits about fan art, being that 90% of it was straight up copied with no originality what so ever. Moreover, I have to say for the most part I was impressed with a lot of the work that I saw from the artists there. I wasnt surprised when I found out some of them were actually professional comic book artists. But needless to say there were a few people that I wouldnt let draw on the wall of a fucking public bathroom stall. The one thing I did notice though is that not too many people were concerned with their own original work, and thats my biggest criticism. I think I was one of the only people who actually tried to promote my own character designs. I mean the beastly cat girl next to me drew a mean Belldandy and one hell of a Puchi-ko. GREAT, but there is one problem with that. SOMEONE ALREADY CREATED THEM! So it doesnt really take that much talent to just put them in different poses or in your own weird sexual bondage fantasies. (Take that perverted old guy in the front of the art room! God I hated that guy.) I mean, I'm not the best artist in the world but I can tell you this, give me a picture of Millions Knives and I can draw him doing pretty much anything in under 30mins without a problem, and that includes fucking Andrews mom in the ass with the angel arm. Let me be the first to say, thats a hard pose to master. I have to say my favorite commissions were the ones that were left up to me, because it let my imagination wander and built up my own talents in creativity, however I admit my creativity needs work but I am still young. My compliments go out to all you artists like Sean Adams and myself that push their 100% original artworks and take a risk for once in their lives, because god knows, drawing yaoi shit is going to get you a job in the near future, especially if you fucking copy it. Also I would like to recognize one person in particular who did nothing but original work and I must say was one of the best people in the room, and his name was James Stanley, or so he said. We had a little incident at Otakon where some covetous Jamaican man, and by Jamaican I mean he had dreadlocks, who tried to push our boy Stanley around because he was not half the artist he was. Sean and ME were going to have to pull out a severe beat down on this fellow if he tried anything. I was going to bite the tendons on the back of his knees I swear it!! But anyway, keep up the good work James and I look forward to seeing you at the next con. And as for the Wolfwood chic, she was actually pretty good too, she sat directly next to us, and for that me and Sean were very grateful. I liked the tiny cross too, it was so cute!! (I didn't know that James fellow well, but I can attest that he was hardcore. He drew as well as he won the Capcom vs. SNK 2 tournament. I'm sure right now he's off with mad bitches. As we all wish we were. - Dave) |
